9-year-old boy tries to drive himself to school, crashes into police car during erratic chase: ‘Straight out of a movie’

A 9-year-old California boy stole his mother’s car and attempted to drive it to school — but instead led an erratic police chase that ended with the child crashing into a cop cruiser.

An officer first spotted a gray Volkswagen sedan strangely stopped in the middle of an intersection in Oroville at around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The officer instructed the driver to move the car, but the vehicle sped off and took police on a “short and erratic chase that ended in a dirt parking lot” just blocks away from Plumas Avenue Elementary School, CHP said.

After coming to a stop, the car reversed suddenly and smashed into the front of a police cruiser “in a moment that could have led to a grave outcome,” police said.

It was at this point the shocked officer discovered that the driver was a 9-year-old boy, which CHP described as “a scene straight out of a movie.”

“Upon making contact, the officer was met with the wide-eyed 9-year-old child, who had taken his mother’s car with the intention of driving himself to school,” CHP said.

No one was hurt in the crash and both vehicles only suffered minor damages. The boy was taken to school as his parents and authorities were notified.
