New York State Police made a total of 24 arrests of individuals Driving While Intoxicated during the weekend of Friday, March 29th to April 1st, 2024. New York State Police strive to keep the roadways of New York State safe every day. Out of those 24 arrests, 3 were Driving While Intoxicated with a Child in the Vehicle and one resulting from a motor vehicle accident.
On March 30th, 2024, at approximately 11:45 P.M., State Police stopped a vehicle on the Southern State Parkway eastbound in the area of exit 39. The driver of the vehicle, KAINA SURUJ, age 26 of Coram, was found to be intoxicated while traveling with one child in the vehicle under 1 year of age. Suruj was charged with Driving While Intoxicated 1st offense (Unclassified Misdemeanor), Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with Child 1st offense, Leandra’s Law (E Felony), Endangering the welfare of a child (A Misdemeanor), along with traffic infractions.
On March 31st, 2024, at approximately 1:13 A.M., State Police conducted a traffic stop on the Southern State Parkway westbound in the area of exit 41A. The driver of the vehicle JOSE MONTERO, age 34 of Norwalk, Connecticut, was found to be intoxicated while traveling with 2 children in the vehicle, ages 7 and 12. Montero was subsequently charged with Driving While Intoxicated (Unclassified Misdemeanor), Operating a motor vehicle with a BAC over .08%, 1st offense (Unclassified Misdemeanor), Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a child – 1st offense (E Felony), Endangering the welfare of a child (A Misdemeanor).
On March 31st, 2024 at approximately 3:10 A.M., State Police responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident on the Sagtikos State Parkway southbound in the area of exit S1. The driver of one of the vehicles was identified as Martha De La Torre, age 42 of Brentwood, NY, who was found to be intoxicated and traveling with 1 child, age 1.5 years old. De La Torre was subsequently charged with Driving While Intoxicated 1st offense (Unclassified Misdemeanor), Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with Child 1st offense (E Felony) and Endangering the Welfare of a child (A Misdemeanor).
These crimes that can and do lead to tragedies are 100% preventable. The New York State Police will strictly enforce Driving While Intoxicated laws, and we remind all motorists that if you have had too much to drink or are under the influence of drugs, find an alternate form of transportation home, and do not get behind the wheel.
