After a teenage girl was seriously injured in a crash that left her pinned underneath an off-roading vehicle in December, the sheriff’s office says they’ve arrested the driver for a DUI, hit-and-run, and more.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) said back on December 22, 2023, Ryan McCue, 37, was driving a Can-Am Defender —an off-road utility vehicle — on Mellen Lane approaching the intersection with Randolph Siding Road in Jupiter at 11:32 p.m.

As McCue and his five other passengers approached the T-style intersection at a high rate of speed, the crash report stated. The Defender continued through the intersection, driving onto the south shoulder of Randolph Siding Road before the vehicle swerved left to avoid striking three reflective yellow warning signs.

The sheriff’s office said the off-road vehicle began to rotate before overturning into a canal.

One of the passengers — a 16-year-old girl — was thrown from the vehicle during the impact, according to the crash report. As the vehicle came to rest in the canal, the teenage girl was pinned underneath, trapped under the water.

The sheriff’s office said by the time the teenager was pulled from the water, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue began to resuscitate the girl while they rushed her to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

According to the crash report, the teenager remains in critical condition. Two other passengers and McCue suffered minor injuries from the crash.

The crash report stated McCue was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs while he was behind the wheel.

The sheriff’s office said on Monday, McCue was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on reckless driving which caused serious bodily injury DUI and serious bodily injury to another, hit-and-run failure to remain at a crash involving serious bodily injury, child neglect with great bodily harm, and failure to register motor vehicle.
