WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A construction worker is dead after being hit by a man who drove into a construction area.

It happened Thursday around 1:00 a.m. at Military Cutoff and Covil Farm Rd.

Wilmington police say the suspect, Dakota Quinn Knight, 29, ran from the crash after hitting Michelle Von Seggern.

Von Seggern died at the scene. Friday would have been her 54th birthday.

A deputy found Knight behind a nearby church.

The WPD traffic unit is investigating the details of the crash at this time.

Knight has been charged with Felony hit and run, Felony DWI and reckless operation of a vehicle. More charges may be forthcoming. The name of the victim is being withheld at this time.

Von Seggern’s employer, Barnhill Contracting released a statement that says:

“Early in the morning on Thursday, April 11th, Barnhill Contracting Company received the tragic news of the loss of an employee, Michelle Von Seggern, in a work zone. The crew was paving Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington, NC when a passenger vehicle struck Michelle. This incident is deeply painful for her loved ones as well as her Barnhill team members.

Currently, we are focusing on supporting Michelle’s family and teammates, cooperating with law enforcement on the investigation and holding a moment of silence across the company to pay our respects. We are grateful to all first responders on the scene for their diligent efforts and quick response to apprehend a suspect.

Michelle’s loss is an urgent reminder of how critical it is to be safe when traveling through work zones. National Work Zone Awareness Week begins Monday, so PLEASE, remember that “Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.”

As we discover the most impactful ways to provide support during this time, we will be sharing updates for any giving opportunities.”
