According to police, the crash involved four cars near Exit 42 around 2:30 a.m.
Police say the woman was on the parkway for five miles traveling in the wrong direction and may have been traveling the wrong-way on Sunrise Highway prior.
When a sheriff spotted the woman, he tried to stop her. Police say the mother sped up.
All other drivers were taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Police did provide a field sobriety test to the mother who is currently at Good Samaritan University Hospital.
Currently no charges have been filed.
The identity of the mother and the child have not been released at this time.
However, News 12 has learned the boy was from Centerport and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The eastbound lanes of Southern State Parkway were closed earlier this morning, but have since reopened.
