EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — State police say an East Hartford woman was charged with DUI after allegedly crashing head-on into a tractor-trailer while driving the wrong way on Interstate 84.
Constance Leggett, 65, was charged with reckless driving, evading responsibility with property damage, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, improper parking, and second-degree reckless endangerment.
Police were dispatched to the area of Exit 48 on I-84 westbound around 2 a.m. Saturday for the report of a crash involving a wrong-way driver who was attempting to flee.
Upon arrival, troopers reported the wrong-way vehicle was gone. However, they found the vehicle soon after, still facing the wrong way near the Exit 54 off-ramp, and disabled due to the crash.
Troopers said the driver- identified as Leggett- had an odor of alcohol and admitted to having multiple drinks before driving. She also failed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, police said.
No injuries were reported in the crash.
Leggett was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Nov. 8.
