Man arrested for OUI after rear-ending state trooper in Westbrook

WESTBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) — A Connecticut State Police trooper was injured Wednesday after police say the trooper’s cruiser was struck during a traffic stop on Interstate 95.

Police said the trooper pulled someone over on I-95 northbound in the area of Exit 65 around 8 p.m.

While in the right lane with emergency lights still activated, the trooper’s cruiser was rear-ended by a separate vehicle.

The trooper was sitting in the driver’s seat at the time. According to an accident report, the cruiser’s airbag did not deployed.

The trooper suffered minor injuries and was transported for treatment, police said.

According to police, the driver who struck the cruiser failed Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and was arrested.

Alvaro Portillo, 32, of New London was charged with operating under the influence, following too closely resulting in a motor vehicle accident, failure to slow down/move over, and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Portillo was held on a $15,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on Nov. 7.
