Organizers charged after street takeover on I-95 in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Four people are accused of orchestrating a street takeover on Interstate 95 Sunday afternoon, according to state police.

The incident started as troopers were monitoring a Palestinian demonstration conducted by a large group of vehicles around 3:34 p.m. Sunday. The event began on Long Wharf Drive.

Troopers then watched the group drive onto I-95 southbound through Exit 46 and somewhere between New Haven and Milford, come to complete stops across all lanes and getting out of their vehicles on the highway.

As troopers responded, the group reportedly continued slowly down I-95 southbound, keeping each lane blocked.

Troopers were able to stop some of the involved vehicles and state police said they identified four people as the leaders of the demonstration.

The following people were issued individual misdemeanor summons for “knowingly inciting a street race/takeover” and released on scene:

  • Ahmed Khatib, 32, of Palisades, New Jersey
  • Abias Azmain, 23, of Hamden
  • Mohammed Shaham, 21, of Fairfield
  • Muhsen Youssef, 20, of Shelton

All the subjects are scheduled to appear at Bridgeport Superior Court in February.
