NEW YORK (PIX11) – Over 4,000 cars have been impounded since multiple law enforcement agencies joined forces last year to conduct ghost license plate operations on New York City roadways, according to the MTA.
More than 70 toll enforcement operations have been held in New York City since March 2024, officials said. At least 902 people have been arrested and more than 39,000 summonses have been issued since 2024, according to the MTA.
More than $50 million is owed from toll evaders caught during the operations, the MTA said.
New license plate rules will go into effect in April, according to the Department of Transportation. Plastic and glass license plate coverings are already prohibited, but now, coatings on a plate – like dirt or rust – that could distort a photograph are now banned, the DOT said.
