Driver charged with DUI after hitting New Canaan fire truck and fleeing

NEW CANAAN, Conn. (WTNH) — A driver was arrested for DUI last Friday after New Canaan police say she fled after striking a fire truck.

Toni Marie Gardella, 40, of Stamford was charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

It was around 9:49 p.m. on April 11 when police responded to the intersection of Jelliff Mill Road and Old Stamford Road for report of a New Canaan Fire Department truck being struck.

Police said they located the vehicle parked with heavy front-end damage at the intersection of Jelliff Mill Road and Shady Knoll Lane.

While speaking with the driver- identified as Gardella- the investigating officer reported an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her breath, along with other signs of impairment.

Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were completed before Gardella was arrested and transported to police headquarters for processing.

She was released on a $300 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 25.
