NYC DOT Plans Dedicated ‘Busway’ For 34th Street

City officials are expected to present the plans to a Midtown community board Monday night.

NEW YORK CITY — The city’s department of transportation will be unveiling proposed plans to ban most passenger vehicle traffic from 34th Street in Manhattan and create a dedicated busway to speed up commute time.

City officials are expected to present the plans to a Midtown community board Monday night, Gothamist reported.

The proposed changes would improve the M34 bus route that runs along 34th Street

As part of the plan, traffic restrictions would be implemented along the corridor between Third and Ninth Avenues, only allowing buses and trucks to drive along the street.

In addition, any passenger vehicle that turns onto 34th Street in the area would have to take the next required turn off the street, according to the report.

The proposed changes would improve the M34 bus route that runs along 34th Street that is used by around 28,000 daily riders.

Pedestrian improvements would be included in the busway plans, according to officials.

The new proposed busway is similar to changes made to 14th Street in 2019, which has increased bus speed on the M14 bus route by 24 percent.

“After seeing tremendous success on 14th Street — where buses have sped up, traffic has virtually disappeared, and far fewer New Yorkers are getting hurt in crashes — we are excited to propose a similar design on 34th Street. We look forward to refining the design with the community,” DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement.
