Another state will soon let drivers increase their speeds to 80 miles per hour.
North Dakota will become the 9th state in the country to raise their speed limit on some multi-lane highways, effective Aug. 1.
The state legislature passed a law last week allowing for higher speeds, which also means speeding will come with higher fines.
The other states with higher speed limits mostly neighbor North Dakota, and include Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota,, Utah and Wyoming. On some Texas toll roads, the limit reaches 85 mph.
Speed limits have been left up to states since 1995.
A 2019 study by the research group found that a 5 mph increase in the speed limit was associated with an 8% increase in fatality rates on interstates and freeways and a 3% increase on other roads.
