Here’s How They’re Doing It:
Thieves use something called a relay attack. Basically, they have a device that can boost the signal from your key fob even if your keys are sitting inside your house, in your bag at work, or on your nightstand. One thief stands near your house (or office), picks up your key’s signal and the other stands near your car to relay it. Your car thinks the key is right there and unlocks. Just like that!
What can you do about this?

The second method is straight up techy. Under your steering wheel is the OBD2 port, that’s what mechanics use to check your engine diagnostics. Thieves use it too, but instead of fixing your engine, they plug in a key programmer.
