If You Have A Car, This Is For You!

Okay, so apparently car thieves don’t even need to steal your keys or show up with a tow truck anymore. They’ve leveled up. With just a laptop and a strong antenna, they can catch the signal from your key fob, even if it’s sitting on your desk or in your bag, and unlock your car like they own it.

Here’s How They’re Doing It:

Thieves use something called a relay attack. Basically, they have a device that can boost the signal from your key fob even if your keys are sitting inside your house, in your bag at work, or on your nightstand. One thief stands near your house (or office), picks up your key’s signal and the other stands near your car to relay it. Your car thinks the key is right there and unlocks. Just like that!

What can you do about this?

Get a Faraday cage or box. It blocks the signal completely. This can be found on Amazon.

There’s more:

The second method is straight up techy. Under your steering wheel is the OBD2 port, that’s what mechanics use to check your engine diagnostics. Thieves use it too, but instead of fixing your engine, they plug in a key programmer. These devices can connect to your car’s computer and program a new fob or digital key in real time, without ever needing your original.

There’s good news:
Buy an OBD2 port lock. It’s small investment that blocks access to that port completely. Both of the items we mentioned can be found on Amazon.

Other Steps You Can Take:

Install a kill switch: Something hidden that stops your car from starting unless you flip it.

Use a steering wheel or pedal lock: Old school but it will slow down thieves.

Park somewhere visible: Choose well-lit, camera monitored spots or indoor parking.

Activate built-in tracking: If your car has one, use it. Or download a reputable app with real-time tracking.

Use GPS trackers like Airtags: Just be cautious with Apple ones, go for a third party that cannot be disabled.
Look, if someone really wants your car, they’ll probably get it. But most of these people are looking for quick, easy jobs. These tools and tips make your car way less appealing. They’re just enough to either spook them or buy time to catch them in the act.
