NEW YORK (WABC) — A new speed limit of 15 miles per hour for e-bikes, e-scooters and pedal-assisted bicycles in New York City is now in effect.
Crews with the Department of Transportation were at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge on Friday and stopping e-bike riders and handing out pamphlets to inform them of the new speed limit.
The rule is meant to help cut down on the number of accidents and pedestrian injuries.
The same speed limit is already in place for stand-up e-scooters.
“Under our administration, New York City is leading the nation in keeping our streets safe for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike, and I am proud that our work has led to traffic fatalities dropping to some of the lowest levels in New York City history,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “To be clear, this isn’t about criminalization; it’s about creating safer, fairer conditions for all New Yorkers.”
According to city data, in the first nine months of this year, there were 51 fatalities related to e-bikes. That’s down from 60 the year before.
As cyclists adjust to the new speed limit, the NYPD will issue warnings to cyclists who exceed the speed limit or use the rule as a secondary offense when handling other violations.
