NYPD: Five dead in New Year’s Day crash in Queens


A two-car collision on the Cross Island Parkway killed all five passengers riding in the same vehicle early Monday morning, police said.

The incident occurred before 6 a.m. on the northbound side of the Cross Island Parkway near the merge onto the southbound Whitestone Expressway, police said.

According to police, Kazeem Ramsahai, a 24-year-old from North Carolina, was driving a Mazda sedan when the car hit a median and ended up in the opposite lane, where it was struck by a Honda.

Ramsahai and passengers Mario Ocampo, 30, Dayanara Benitez Ocampo, 19, Salma Garcia-Diaz, 23, and Jordy Bentances, 20, all from Queens, were pronounced dead after the crash, police said.

The driver operating the Honda was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital Queens in stable condition, authorities said.

The NYPD is investigating the incident, and no arrests have been made.
