A 9-year-old California boy stole his mother’s car and attempted to drive it to school — but instead led an erratic police chase that ended with the child crashing into a cop cruiser.
An officer first spotted a gray Volkswagen sedan strangely stopped in the middle of an intersection in Oroville at around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The officer instructed the driver to move the car, but the vehicle sped off and took police on a “short and erratic chase that ended in a dirt parking lot” just blocks away from Plumas Avenue Elementary School, CHP said.
After coming to a stop, the car reversed suddenly and smashed into the front of a police cruiser “in a moment that could have led to a grave outcome,” police said.
It was at this point the shocked officer discovered that the driver was a 9-year-old boy, which CHP described as “a scene straight out of a movie.”
No one was hurt in the crash and both vehicles only suffered minor damages. The boy was taken to school as his parents and authorities were notified.
